Kevin Rushton always wanted to perform with a band even though he didn’t know how to play an instrument. Four years ago, on the spur of the moment, the former White House staffer and now software project manager for a company in Troy, bid on a Fender Stratocaster guitar on eBay and won.
"It was frustrating but exciting to have the guitar, but I had nowhere to go with it," Rushton said. Then his sister emailed him a link to the Detroit School of Rock and Pop Music, newly opened in a former bike shop on Washington Avenue in Royal Oak. "I called them the next day."
"He was one of our first adult students," said Jason Gittinger, the school's owner and executive producer. "He kept coming back and that meant a lot to me."
