The Department of Education is giving brightly coloured lunch bags to about 3,500 Grade Primary students in Nova Scotia.
But instead of food, these bags contain books and learning activities children can do at home with their families.

"It's a resource for families. It's called Play, Talk, Learn."
She said the project emphasizes how important play and conversation is in a child's development and "how parents can support their children's learning."
Families of Grade Primary students in schools in the Annapolis, Cape Breton-Victoria, South Shore and Strait regional school boards began receiving the bags last week.

"Each item was chosen quite specifically to link to things we do in the classroom," Blackwood said. "We also put an information card in telling families about the contents and suggesting some of the things they might talk to their children about, or (how to) engage in play activities with them."

Each bag is costing the department about $35.44. It has spent about $126,000 out of its existing budget on the lunch bags, their contents and their distribution to the four school boards.

Blackwood was taken aback by that criticism.
