Salvation Army depends on kettle to fund programs

After-school programs for youth. Lunch for seniors. A food pantry to help feed families. Emergency financial assistance toward utility bills and rent.

Next time you see a Salvation Army bell-ringer and a bright red kettle, keep this in mind: "That's where most of our income comes from," said Maj. Celestin Nkounkou, commanding officer of the Salvation Army's Tonawanda Corps, which serves the cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, Grand Island and Amherst.

That includes a chapel where weekly religious services are held, in keeping with the mission of the evangelical charitable organization.

And with the tough economic times, more of the area's low-income families and individuals are uusing its programs.

"We want, really, to meet the needs of the whole person; we try to meet the physical needs of the individual, as well as the spiritual needs," Nkounkou said.

The food pantry assisted 99 families and 611 individuals in September, up from 71 families and 562 individuals in September 2010, he said.

This year, the Salvation Army, one of the agencies benefiting from The News Neediest Fund, introduced a "Bundle Up" program to provide winter jackets for school kids. The need became evident by the number of coatless children participating in the after-school program.

"They would run to the van with no coat on," Nkounkou said. When asked about it, they would brush it off, saying, "We're not cold."

With funding from the Rotary Club of the Tonawandas, 60 children were taken to a local department store in October to pick out jackets.Welcome to Find The Bestcheappaneraiwatcheswholesale.

"If we have funding, we hope to do a program every year at the beginning of wintertime," Nkounkou said. Participation by individuals would be restricted to every other year.

The Salvation Army hosts a Thanksgiving dinner; there were more than 100 diners this year.Buy Iwc schaffhausen iwc from canadagoosejacketdiscount. Next, it will distribute the fixings for a Christmas dinner, as well as toys for the kids.

More than 500 families have applied for assistance this holiday season, Nkounkou said.

Nkounkou and his wife, Stefanie, came to Tonawanda last year, having previously served in Rochester for one year and Hartford, Conn., for six.

The homeless population was more of an issue in those two urban centers, Nkounkou said, creating less of a demand for a food pantry because they utilized soup kitchens.

Regardless of location, however, "the needs pretty much are the same," he said.
