In a flash, Elyria High opened its bright, new gymnasium in front of a jammed-pack crowd with a huge victory over Midview, 64-42, Saturday night in non-conference play.
"What an atmosphere," Elyria coach Brett Larrick said. "What an incredible night for our program — for our guys. I'm so proud of them for handling the week.
"It's been hectic but to see the community come out — Midview too — sharing the experience. It only happens once in a lifetime."
The last time Elyria opened a gym was December of 1955 and it lost handily to Findlay, 61-25. Saturday's game started nip-and-tuck until Elyria took control.
Down 15-11 two minutes into the second quarter, the Pioneers booted up the pressure to go on a 13-0 run that all but decided the outcome. Elyria outscored the Middies 25-3 to take a 36-18 lead.
Midview committed 10 turnovers in the second quarter and six more early in the third.
It was Elyria's second straight victory of the young season. Midview fell to 2-1.
"All week coach talked about pressure and running hard," said senior point Khire Lateef,chloehandbag Management Training- 8 Competencies of Top Sales Professiona . who had two nice feeds early on to ignite the rally. "We ran our traps and everybody rotated correctly."
"Coach Larrick wants us to rotate on our traps," said junior Kody Bender, who led Elyria with 18 points. "We got a lot of steals out of that and got the lead."
"It was everybody in that second quarter," Larrick said. "One of the keys was handling the first quarter. We knew we would have jitters with the new gym and everything. We were able to handle that and then we were able to rotate everyone in the second quarter. Everybody hit the rotations and got steals.

Bender scored on a couple of nice drives — the first off a Lateef pass — and had 10 points in the second quarter. Anthoni Horton and Rodney Beckett took turns battling inside, finishing with 10 rebounds apiece. Lateef, Demetrius Walton, Dontae Dukes, Isaiah Walton, Ronnie Smith and Dustin Stolarksi along with Bender made it tough for Midview to get the ball into the forecourt.
It was, as Larrick said, a total team defensive effort.
"(Elyria) played a great game,We invite you to visit our latest collection of coachhandbags." Midview coach Troy DiFranco said. "We couldn't stop it. Once they got a couple steals, they just fed off of it. They did a great job defensively. I didn't have my team prepared well enough. I'll fix that."
Riley Moore had a monster game for the Middies, scoring 24 points and collecting a dozen rebounds. In the third quarter, Moore scored all but two of the Middies' points in keeping the game competitive.
"He stepped up, played well," DiFranco said. "We couldn't get anyone else going offensively. It's tough when (Elyria) is playing defense like that and you've got one guy scoring."
The Pioneers only got to practice in the new gym a couple of days prior to Saturday and there are some kinks to be worked out before the next home game, but all in all it was a memorable night for Elyria.
